THE LIGHT OF INNOVATION
Who invented it? Exactly. We Swabians. From the bicycle to the automobile, from the power saw to the computer. Whenever a light goes on for humankind, we were usually the ones with their hands on the switch. For some reason, we Swabians were endowed with practical ingenuity from the cradle. And that is how, in 1928 – shortly after fellow Swabian Albert Einstein illuminated the world with his theory of relativity – Emil Waldmann founded his electrical installation business. A regional player in the early days (see above), now a world market leader with 1,000 employees and branches in a dozen countries. Family-run, as Hidden Champions should be.

Anyone based in the Black Forest must shine very brightly indeed to be seen.For the last 90 years, here in Villingen-Schwenningen, we have been building some of the finest lighting systems in the world. But for us, light is not an end in itself. Our light exists to serve.To work. To create. To extend horizons. To uncover misdeeds (see above). To wake people up. To control hormones. Maximum quality and optimum user-friendliness are not ends in themselves. They ensure that people can do what they want to do. And, thanks to cutting-edge German technology, to do so as well as humanly possible. Only then are we satisfied. Not being criticized suffices as praise!

THE LIGHT OF WELL-BEING
Four of five workplaces are illuminated incorrectly. Waldmann avoids direct glare through high levels of contrast in lighting intensity. Preventing reflections from the mirror action of windows and luminaires. And banning the shadows cast by a writing hand through an ideal balance of diffuse and direct light. All this makes us feel entitled to believe that our tireless endeavours to achieve technical perfection can also bring out beauty (see above).
